With a reputation for high quality products and pedigree going back over 150 years, Venables Brothers is no ordinary company. The original family firm Henry Venables was started by Paul & Chuck’s Great, Great, Grandfather over 150 years ago in Stafford. Henry Venables started his sawmilling business supplying beech for the shoe heel trade, and making the packing cases for the shoes to be exported to the colonies which were made to such a high specification that they were eventually used as furniture by Henry’s antipodean customers!
Henry’s transition into the use of oak was a ‘quirk of fate’ – some of his customers were poor payers and as a result Henry was allowed to take oak trees from local estates, in lieu of payment and then invested in one of the first steam powered sawmills in Staffordshire. To coin a seasoned expression ‘the rest is history’!
Paul and Chuck Venables started Venables Brothers in 1999 and whilst Paul concentrates on sales and purchasing, Chuck enjoys the manufacturing side, employing the same ‘eye for detail’ as his G-Great Grandfather, Henry. Venables Brothers is clearly a customer focussed company and combined with the high standards of quality control it is easy to see how they have developed an unrivalled reputation for high quality hard wood products. Now based in Cheswardine, Shropshire, their offices are not surprisingly located in a traditional oak framed building!
Paul Venables said that they were always exploring opportunities to innovate with their product range. “We are now supplying finger-jointed, glue laminated beams”, Paul said proudly, “We continue to adopt modern manufacturing techniques whilst preserving traditional skills”.
The firm’s care and attention to detail is reflected in every aspect of the business including their financial data and reporting. Paul said that Barringtons support had been an invaluable part of their success with Phil helping us from day one when we set up the new business. “I like Barringtons direct, frank and honest approach” said Paul.
Barringtons MD Phil Wood said that Venables Brothers had a great team dealing with the bookkeeping and accounts. “This allows Barringtons to apply our expertise analysing data, identifying opportunities and finding resolutions to problems. In short it’s a partnership that continues to improve the profitability and long term viability of the business.” Phil concluded.
