Summer hots up for Barringtons

Here at Barringtons we love to get out and about to meet clients in an informal setting.

We hit the road to attend the Staffordshire County Show where we welcomed clients, old and new, for lunch and afternoon tea.

Next we will be at the Newport Show on July 9 when we would love you to join us for a hearty hog roast lunch and afternoon tea. Have a brew, glass of wine or Pimms with us in our marquee overlooking the glorious showground.

Dabbers net new support from Barringtons

Nantwich Town Football Club has won a new sponsor as it nears the end of a record-breaking year.

Barringtons Chartered Accountants in Nantwich is now backing The Dabbers who play their last game at home against Frickley on April 23.

Andrew Wilshaw, a director at Barringtons, said: “We love being part of this lovely town and its thriving business community. The football club adds to the feel-good-factor and we are delighted to be on-board as a sponsor in what has been a very memorable season.”

Nantwich Town won through to the FA Trophy semi-final in March. Now its ending the season with its highest ranking in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier for 10 years.

Mr Wilshaw added: “The FA Trophy was a David and Goliath clash placing Nantwich just one game away from Wembley. Although they didn’t make the final, it was a huge achievement to get so far in a major tournament.”

Barringtons is celebrating five years in Nantwich where it handles the accounts of businesses and organisations of all sizes as well as the football club which also runs a shop and function suite.

Nantwich Town chairman Tony Davison said: “The FA Trophy battle has generated a lot of interest in the club and pushed up attendances. It’s great to end the year on a high and welcome Barringtons as a sponsor.”

XEROCON 2016

Phil, Oli, Jon, Megan and Josh attended the Xero 2016 conference in Battersea this week and were mightily impressed with the two days of presentations and demonstrations from Xero and from some of their (now nearly 500) add on partners.

Lee in the running to boost hospice funds

Accountant Lee Bridgwood is hard in training for his fifth challenge to raise money for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice

Local man Lee, 35, has raised more than £3000 for the hospice over the past five years by putting his endurance to the test in tough events.

He’s conquered the Three Peaks Challenge twice, completed the Stafford Half Marathon and performed a 10,000ft parachute jump.

His last challenge was the Tough Mudder 12-mile army-style obstacle course and next is the London Marathon in April.

Part of his training regime is running home from Barringtons Chartered Accountants in Newcastle to Lightwood.

Lee, who works as a client services manager at the accountancy firm, has notched up a 16 mile run so far and is increasing his total by two miles each week.

When not running, he takes part in daring downhill mountain bikes as a hobby. Two years ago he fell and broke his collarbone in Wales but passers-by came to the rescue and called the ambulance.

He said: “All these events have left me hurting for a few days afterwards but running a full marathon takes true stamina.

“Places in the London event were highly sought after and I am determined to reach the 26.2 miles needed over the new few weeks.”

The hospice is the firm’s chosen charity. Staff raise money through dress down days and at Christmas managing director Phil Wood presented £500 towards festive activities for patients and families.

Lee, who is sponsored by colleagues, added: “I know a lot of people who have been touched by the overwhelming dedication of staff at the hospice and I hope to raise at least £2000.”

Barringtons helps to nurture young talent

Once again Barringtons sponsored two prizes at the City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College annual awards evening.

Managing director Phil Wood was pleased to present Lori Brough with The Barringtons Accountants Prize for Business Studies and to reward Stella Lam with the Barringtons Accountants Prize for Chemistry.

Lori is currently taking a gap year and working full time prior to studying Accounting at Lancaster University in the next academic year and wants to eventually qualify as an accountant while Stella is currently studying Pharmacy at the University of Bath and plans to become a Pharmacist in the future.

Phil said: “We congratulate them both, and indeed all the other prize-winners at the ceremony, and wish them all the very best in their future studies and careers.”

More than 200 students, proud parents, business owners and community groups attended the evening.

Sixth Form College Principal, Paul Mangnall, said: “Our Annual Prize Presentation Evening for Former Students is always a highlight of our college calendar as we celebrate their achievements while studying with us and the wonderful progress they have made in their careers and studies since.”

The City of Stoke on Trent Sixth Form College is home to 1,700 students and 140 members of staff.

It’s showtime for Barringtons!

Barringtons has thrown its weight behind one of Shropshire’s most popular agricultural shows.

The firm has become a major sponsor of the Newport Show which draws more than 12,000 people to the picturesque Chetwynd Deer Park each July.

Erika Sadler, of the show organising committee, said: “We may attract huge numbers, but securing large-scale sponsorship is never an easy task which is why we are so grateful to Barringtons for coming onboard.

“Although a relative newcomer to the event, Barringtons has become a real driving force behind the show’s aims to promote the region and its agricultural industries. We can’t thank them enough.”

Chamber adds accountants as Patrons

Barringtons has become a patron member of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce.

Our managing director Philip Wood commented: “We are members of several Chambers, but Shropshire is the first we decided to back as Patrons.

Shropshire Chamber of Commerce is kicking off a new event at Shrewsbury Town Food Club on March 26 – and Barringtons will play a role as Patrons of the organisation.

FClogoAn Expo will be staged focusing on all areas of e-Commerce, delivering specialist advice, products & services and thought leadership on areas including marketing, social media, payments, delivery and logistics, customer service and the more generalist topics affecting your overall e-Commerce and multi-channel strategies.

It’s showtime for the team this summer

Music-lovers were in harmony with a Nantwich firm as it raised money for St Luke’s Cheshire Hospice.

A gala concert night featuring an award-winning brass band and male voice choir has put more than £4,000 in the hospice coffers after crowds flocked to Nantwich Parish Church.

Barringtons backed the night which included performances by the internationally-renowned Rhos Orpheus Male Voice Choir and Crewe-based Co-operative Funeralcare Band.

Managing director Phil Wood said: “Hospice supporters filled the church and were treated to a rip-roaring night of music. It stirred the soul and sent everyone home in high spirits.

“It was great to see such a fabulous turn-out and people give generously to a raffle also.”

The Welsh choir has performed across the globe since forming in 1957 and carried off numerous awards while the championship band is rated one of the best in the country.

Congratulations to Emma!

Emma is celebrating after passing her final ACCA accountancy exam with flying colours.

Juggling work and home commitments is an area familiar to Emma Fergusson who works in Client Services in our Newcastle office.

Emma said: “Becoming a fully-trained accountant with all the necessary qualifications under your belt takes around four years. It took me a couple of years longer as I had my son during my studies. But he’s a real bundle of fun and being a mum has given me an insight into the demands of family life and running a business.”

Emma looks after the books of many small to medium businesses across Cheshire and Staffordshire.

Away from the office, Emma is treasurer of Packmoor Parents Community Action Group – an organisation that fundraises for the benefit of the village and its children.

New Shropshire and Cheshire bases unveiled after take-over

Summer saw Barringtons welcome seven new members of staff to the team after completing the acquisition of Mercer & Co in Market Drayton & Nantwich

The company has handed over a portfolio of more than 400 clients spanning companies of all sizes, from sole traders to limited companies, including many with business interests overseas.

Barringtons, which has offices on Queen Street, will continue to operate both bases in the town.

Managing Director Phil Wood said: “This practice has only become available because of the illness of Steve Mercer.

“Over the years he has built up a very successful business while on a personal level, he is a true inspiration to anyone going through the trauma of serious illness.”

Joining us from Mercer & Co are client service managers, Anne Allwood and Alison Galloway, supported by Enid Avery, Chloe Lewis, Daniel Large, Stephanie Newstead and Lynda Brammer who all live in the local area.

Mr Mercer said: “Looking after clients is not just about ‘doing their books’ but advising them on all manner of financial issues which impact on their lives and businesses. Barringtons has the same ethos and as I undergo treatment, and face periods in hospital, I will know these clients are in safe hands.”

Getting out and about to greet clients

With wellies at the ready, Barringtons staff headed off to top country shows across the region.

Among the highlights were our visits to the Staffordshire County Show and the Newport Show in Shropshire.

While we couldn’t bring the sunshine, we did ensure our guests received a warm welcome to the County Showground.

We welcomed more than 200 visitors to our marquee where a hog roast, wine and hot drinks went down well on two chilly days.

In Newport, it was parasols in hand for a sweltering day on the Chetwynd Deer Park.

A marquee, set high on a grass bank, offered a great vantage point for all that was going on in the main arena.

Barringtons is a regular sponsor of the show promoting agricultural industries.

It’s showtime for the team this summer

Barringtons is toasting success after making its debut at the Staffordshire County Show.

While we couldn’t bring the sunshine, we did ensure our guests received a warm welcome.

We welcomed over 200 invited clients and visitors to our marquee on the showground where a hog roast, wine and hot drinks went down well on two chilly days.

Andy Bridge, Barringtons Technical Director, said: “With our head office in Staffordshire, it has been high on the agenda to attend the show and give our clients, old and new, a chance to enjoy a great social occasion and meet the team.

“The event is a showcase for Staffordshire’s agricultural industries and with many farming clients on our books, it was also a way to show our support to them.”

Barringtons is also a sponsor of the Newport Show in Shropshire and will be flying the company flag in a marquee on show day, July 12.

In Nantwich, where we have recently opened new offices, we support the town’s Food and Drink Festival which gives a great boost to its economy each September.

Mud glorious mud

Action man Lee Bridgwood likes a challenge – so this time he took on an event dubbed ‘Probably the Toughest on the Planet’ to raise a fantastic £600 for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, sponsored by colleagues.

Client Services Manager Lee, 32, tested his grit at Tough Mudder – a 12 mile obstacle course designed by the Special Forces to challenge the strength and stamina of some of the country’s fittest and most determined men and women.

Lee is no stranger to dare-devil pursuits. Last year he raised £600 for the Dougie Mac, our chosen charity, with a skydive plunging 10,000ft from a plane at Whitchurch airfield.

Of Tough Mudder, he said: “All the training paid off and the team completed the course in 2 hours 25 minutes. There were no major injuries other than bruising and I ache in places I didn’t think it was possible. But it was a fantastic event and the camaraderie and banter with the other participants was amazing.”

Lee’s team powered through the first nine miles and dealt with everything the course could throw at them before reaching the mud mile.

He added: “This was a series of hills you had to scramble over followed by 50 foot bogs of waist deep mud, it was horrific. Three of us, including myself, were struck down with terrible cramp but we ploughed on.

“Eventually there was a mile run across an open field to the final series of obstacles which included monkey bars, unstable platforms across a pond, running up a 30 foot quarter pipe and a final two mile slog uphill to the final obstacle, ‘Electroshock Therapy’. This was running through unavoidable live cables carrying up to 10,000 volts each. We attacked it with everything we had but one by one we were knocked off our feet by the sheer force of the shocks – agony!”

At the end they were presented with prized orange Tough Mudder headbands and a much-needed pint.

Payroll Team – we salute you

Well done to our Payroll department for reaching the national finals of a major industry competition.

We were the only Staffordshire finalists in the top team category of the Payroll World Awards 2013.

The awards, staged by industry magazine Payroll World, recognise exceptional customer care and high standards of accuracy provided by specialists across the country.

And customer service is key in Payroll which relieves employers of the headache of calculating staff payments and tax deductions for more than 270 businesses across Stoke-on-Trent.

Managing director Phil Wood said: “The awards are subject to fierce competition from a large number of well established payroll providers throughout the UK and getting to the finals was feat in itself.

“Although we weren’t the outright winners this was a stunning achievement on our first year of entering.”

Attending the award at the Millennium Hotel in London’s Mayfair were Sue Howie and Helen Bridgwood from the Barringtons Payroll team.

They were treated to a champagne reception and a luxury meal.

Everyone at Barringtons is thrilled that Helen and Sue’s hard work has been recognized.

Clients enjoy a taste of life down on the farm

Barringtons teamed up with Barclays to welcome clients and friends to the Cheshire Plough Match.

Style and skill was on display as competitors demonstrated shire horse and tractor ploughing and hedge-laying and cutting.

Set in the heart of the Cheshire countryside at Grange Farm, Churton near Chester, the event attracted hundreds of spectators.

Barringtons managing director Phil Wood said: “The Cheshire Plough Match is one of the highlights of the North West’s agricultural calendar.

“It was the first time Barringtons had a presence and we were pleased to make our debut alongside colleagues from Barclays’ agricultural team for the North West and Midlands.

“The event moves to different venues each year and we looking forward to be part of it in 2014.”

Rain in the first half of the day left conditions muddy underfoot but it failed to dampen spirits.

There was friendly banter and networking between clients of both businesses – and the hot drinks and hog roast went down a treat.

Payroll heroes scoop national recognition

Barringtons’ Payroll Bureau has won through to the finals of a high-profile competition!

And that’s even more thrilling as we are the only Staffordshire finalists in the top team category of the Payroll World Awards 2013.

The awards, staged by industry magazine Payroll World, recognise exceptional customer care and high standards of accuracy provided by specialists across the country.

Winners will be announced at the plush Millennium Hotel in Mayfair, London on October 24.

MD Phil Wood said: “Our Payroll team has been shortlisted as a finalist in the annual Payroll World Awards 2013 at the first time of entering.

“These prestigious awards are made in recognition of excellent customer service and are subject to fierce competition from a large number of well established payroll providers throughout the UK and we are thrilled to have been shortlisted in such exalted company.”

The team relieves employers of the headache of calculating staff payments and tax deductions for more than more 270 businesses across Stoke-on-Trent. Together they beat off strong competition from payroll bureau service providers across the country.

Helen rides on a crest of a wave passing exams

There was good news awaiting Payroll assistant Helen Bridgwood when she returned from her holiday at the Welsh seaside.

She had passed the business tax module of the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Level 4 Diploma in Accounting.

It means Helen has passed all the AAT accounting qualifications and is entitled to use the letters MAAT after her name.

She said: “I studied AAT at night for the last five years, starting off with levels 2 & 3 of the Certificate in Payroll Administration at Stoke-on-Trent College and then I moved on to do levels 2, 3 and 4 of the accounting qualification at Newcastle under Lyme College.

“It’s a long process but well worth it and I work in a very friendly team at Barringtons.”

Helen looks after payroll matters for a wide range of clients from small employers with less than five members of staff to large concerns with more than 50. They include pubs, restaurants and a chemical company.

Lucky winners reap rewards

Three hampers brimming over with goodies are on their way to prize winners following our stand at the Newport Show.

A children’s colouring contest attracted a large number of entries as did a draw amongst clients and contacts.

Hampers packed with sweets went to the winning children while the client draw winner received a hamper packed full of speciality foods and beers.

Tina completes her second marathon trek

Well done to Tina Barry (pictured) Client Taxation Manager at our Newcastle office after she put her best foot forward in a walking half marathon for a local hospice.

With sponsorship support from colleagues and friends, Tina completed the Midnight Walk for St Luke’s Hospice in Winsford for a second year running raising £300.

The ladies-only trek from Reaseheath College in Nantwich to the MMU in Crewe – and then all the way back – took Tina three hours and 40 minutes.

She said: “Over a 1000 women took part and the atmosphere was electric. Crowds were out in the early hours of the morning cheering us on and I look forward to doing it again next year, despite the sore feet!”

Walkers were treated to chocolate and bananas at the half-way point in the 13.1 mile half marathon. At the end there were bacon butties and the smell was enough to put a spring in the step of tired legs on the final stretch.

Zara marks milestone birthday with role at Barringtons

Barringtons has welcomed a young recruit to the fold.

Zara Foster celebrated her 18th birthday by joining our Newcastle office as an apprentice.

The former Madeley High School pupil will start her AAT accountancy studies in September.

Local girl Zara, who lives in Talke, will spend one day a week at Newcastle College and the rest of the week getting hands-on experience with the team.

Barringtons MD Phil Wood said: “We are always keen to give bright young minds a chance and have helped a number of apprentices get their foot on the career ladder in recent years.”

Away from her desk Zara enjoys swimming, cycling and running.

Show proves a sizzling success – with a little help from us

Barringtons was a key sponsor of the Newport Show again this year.

Saturday saw record crowds of more than 13,000 people pour into the Chetwynd Deer Park and we were delighted to welcome many clients, old and new, to our stand.

Greeting them was our MD Phil Wood who said: “The show’s roots remain in farming and we have many clients in the rural area.  It’s great to get out and meet them and their families while they are enjoying the day.”

The day was blessed with glorious sunshine and our visitors enjoyed a little respite in the shade.

Computer whizz Chris is Employee of the Year!

Congratulations to Chris Johnson who has been named our Employee of the Year.

IT Systems Manager Chris, 29, is looking forward to a luxury villa holiday in Cyrus after carrying off the award – the first year it has been introduced to reward the top employee as voted for by colleagues.

After six years working with Barringtons at our Newcastle headquarters, Chris has earned a reputation for sorting out computer issues in a speedy and straight-forward manner.

Managing director Phil Wood said: “Chris has played a big role in updating all our systems and is always on hand to offer support. His jargon-free approach to new technology has helped us all get to grips with new software and packages that enhance our services to clients.”

And with more than 80 computers in the Newcastle office alone, Chris, who previously worked in IT at the Sentinel newspaper, has his work cut out.

One of his latest projects was to support the development of Barringtons’ new-look website.

Sci-fi fan is ‘sew’ good to hospice

DR Who fanatic James Nicholls, who works in our Newcastle office, has been hitting local headlines with his intergalactic challenge.

James has been knitting Tom Baker-style scarves and watching a mountain of old episodes to help raise cash for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

The 28 year-old took up knitting to relax while studying for his accountancy qualification and has sold the long, colourful scarves on the internet for £50.

After passing with flying colours he is being sponsored by colleagues to watch 900 episodes – a total of 422 hours – of the Time Lord’s space travels.

He said: “Colleagues are really committed to supporting the hospice and are always coming up with wacky ideas to raise funds. When they heard I knit scarves they suggested I did it for the hospice while sponsoring me to watch my entire collection of DVDs in 900 days.

“I’m just over half way through and have reached 1978 with Tom Baker as the Doctor so there’s quite a way to go yet but so far I have not missed a day.”

The ‘Who-vian’ hopes to raise hundreds of pounds for the hospice and add to the funds already raised by colleagues who stage dress down Fridays and regular whip-rounds.

Phil Wood takes over reins of historic club

Barringtons MD Phil Wood has taken over at the helm of the Hanley Association for the Prosecution of Felons.

Phil, President of the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce, was installed as the organisation’s 221st President at its annual dinner.

More than 100 members of the historic social club gathered for the event at the Best Western Moat House, Festival Park.

He said: “Before we had a police force victims of crime had to pay all the costs of bringing a felon to justice so communities set up societies for the Prosecution of Felons.

“Each member paid a subscription so the society could act on behalf of victims and bring criminals to justice.

“Although it no longer has that role, the Association still stands for honesty in life and business and I am honoured to become its local President.”

Most Felons Associations were founded between 1780s and 1820s with members drawn from the farming community and trade.

It’s a goal for accountant Chris

Keen footballer Chris McEnaney has kicked off his career with Barringtons in Nantwich after passing his 14-stage accountancy exams.

The 29 year-old, who manages a Middlewich football team, is the latest recruit at our Barker Street base.

The former pupil of St Nicholas RC School in Northwich, passed his ACCA accountancy qualifications with flying colours and is now looking after a range of clients from sole trader to large limited company.

Chris, who plays in goal, said: “Accountancy comes in very handy as manager of a team. Keeping a keen eye on the match fees and budget ensures the future of the side.”

The team, AFC Artois, plays regular matches for the charity DEBRA which raises money for people with a genetic skin blistering disorder and has a shop in Sandbach.

The next match will be at Middlewich Leisure Centre in May.

Kath notches up an office milestone

Barringtons office assistant Kath Goodwin can look forward to a shopping spree after being rewarded for her long service.

Kath, the cheery voice at the end of the phone when you call our Newcastle office, has notched up 25 years in the role of an admin assistant working previously with another local firm of accountants and the last nine years with Barringtons.

Times have certainly changed a great deal for the grandmother of two. She says: “Embracing new technology was a challenge. Years ago we just had a word processor for writing letters. Now much more is done by email which is faster but there’s no replacing talking to people.

And Kath certainly does a lot of that. In an average day she answers more than 100 phone calls – diverting them to our specialist departments and more than 30 staff at Newcastle as well as Barringtons’ bases in Nantwich, Newport and Market Drayton.

Managing director Phil Wood said: “Kath has always been the friendly voice at the end of the phone and plays a key role in the smooth running of our front office. It was nice to reward her hard work.”

Staff gathered to see her presented with Potteries Centre shopping vouchers which she plans to spend on accessories for her forthcoming holiday.

Barringtons responds to raid with collection

Our office pals are pulling out all the stops to support the Douglas Macmillan Hospice in Stoke-on-Trent after being outraged by the theft at its Biddulph charity shop.

Thieves stole more than £1,000 worth of donated items after smashing their way in through the roof. The stock, sold to help raise funds for the care of terminally ill local people, needs to be replaced and staff at Barringtons in Newcastle responded with an immediate collection of clothes, shoes, books and CDs.

Barringtons MD Phil Wood, a member of the hospice Ruby Ball organising committee, said: “It never ceases to amaze me how low some people can stoop.

“To steal from a shop raising money for the care of hospice patients is probably the worst form of theft. It left us all feeling quite disgusted but geared up to do what we can.”

The ‘Dougie Mac’ is one of our chosen charities of the year with staff staging regular dress down days and sponsored events to boost funds. Now we have become a collection point for the hospice’s ‘Bag It, Bin It’ campaign at its Etruria Road base.

Colleagues have bagged a wide-variety of donated goods and are urging local people and nearby workers to bring their quality clothing, books, CDs, DVDs and household items to the Newcastle office.

Hospice fundraiser Suzi Smith said: “Barringtons has always been a big supporter of the hospice and we hope other businesses will follow its lead.”

Bryan carries off prize hamper

One of the area’s most well-known business names was lucky enough to win a Barringtons hamper packed full of luxury products at the recent ‘Let’s Do Business’ event.

Bryan Carnes, former chief executive of the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce, was one of more than 70 people to enter a draw at our stand during the day at the Britannia Stadium.

After 27 years of service with the Chamber, Bryan is now a Business Development Manager at JSW Insurance Services in Newcastle.

He was presented with the hamper by Barringtons MD Phil Wood, current President of the Chamber.

Let’s Do Business – a success for Barringtons

Barringtons welcomed clients old and new to its stand at the crowd-pulling ‘Let’s Do Business’ event staged by the North Staffordshire Chamber at the Britannia Stadium.

Hundreds of visitors strolled round business exhibition stands at the home of Stoke City Football Club and we were delighted to meet many people keen to learn about the wide range of services we provide.

Our brochures and branded pens and key-rings were quickly snapped up and we received many entries in a draw for a hamper packed full of delicious foods.

Many thanks to everyone who came to meet us, especially our clients.

Our next outing will be to the Emma Bridgewater pottery factory in Hanley to host the City of Ladies networking group on November 15.

Footie fan Jo scores a hit with doctors

Barringtons has welcomed a new addition to its team at Newcastle.

Jo Hamilton (pictured) has joined us as tax manager overseeing a large department looking after the tax affairs of more than 800 small to medium businesses across Stoke-on-Trent.

Previously working for a firm in Newcastle, Jo is proving just the tonic for a great many doctors on her books.

She said: “Often doctors work on a self-employed basis. They can be part of a private practice or offer appointments as consultants.

“All this generates the need for someone to look after their tax affairs and this is an area of business that is growing at Barringtons.”

The former Newcastle College student, who lives in Birches Head, is member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and last year gained a specialist qualification as a Chartered Tax Advisor.

When not at her desk, Jo, an ardent Stoke City fan, can be found at the Britannia Stadium where she attends all the home matches.

Daryl is a runaway success for hospice

Congratulations to Daryl Smallwood (pictured) after completing the Great North Run.

Daryl, an accountant in our Newcastle office, put his best foot forward to help boost funds for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

And the money has come rolling in, thanks to sponsorship from clients and colleagues.

To date his marathon effort has made £175 for the hospice and further funds are still being totted up.

He said: “I managed to complete the run in 1:41:15 which I was slightly disappointed with as I thought I would have been able to go a little quicker given the favourable conditions, however, I finished 3,727th out of 55,000 runners which I suppose isn’t too bad.”

Hats off to kind-hearted accountants

Staff at Barringtons have been brimming over with ideas to help boost funds for the Douglas Macmillan hospice at Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent.

They have launched a top hat fundraising drive asking clients and colleagues to chip in to a collection ahead of the hospice’s Top Hat and Tiaras grand annual ball.

Throughout the autumn and winter months Barringtons, and its sister company BCR which specialises in corporate recovery and insolvency, will be staging top hat whip-rounds and dress down days in a bid to put several hundred pounds in the hospice coffers.

MD Phil Wood said: “My mother was only 51 when she died of a brain tumour.

Thirty years on I have never forgotten just how kind the hospice staff were to her in her final days and to my family as we coped with the loss.

“BCR always takes a table at the charity ball and Barringtons offers a prize in the Grand Auction. This year we thought we would go one step further and do some fundraising as well. The top hats tie in with the theme and make it a bit of fun.”

The ball at Keele Hall on October 5 features a five course gourmet banquet, disco, casino and grand auction as well as a prize draw and midnight raid of the ‘goody’ cupboard.

Showtime for Barringtons staff

Barringtons was a key sponsor of the Newport Show in Shropshire for the second year running on July 14 and we were thrilled to welcome clients old and new to our marquee stand on the showground.

Wine, soft drinks and nibbles were served and the children weren’t left out with an activity area for them to be entertained while mum and dad talked to our team.

The morning was blessed with glorious sunshine but when the heavens opened in the afternoon, our marquee became especially busy!

Earlier our MD Phil Wood took to the stage to chat to Signal 107 radio presenter Dicky Dodd.

The station was keen to hear all about Barringtons and its support of the show.

Phil Wood said: “As a business in the community, we were keen to get behind the show which really helps to promote the small town of Newport and its agricultural industries.”

Showtime for the Barringtons’ team

Barringtons directors and key members of staff were out in full force at the Newport Show in Shropshire on Saturday, July 14.

They were delighted to meet clients old and new in our newly-extended stand which had a high-profile on the showground, close to all the main activities.

They joined us for wine and nibbles throughout the day which was blessed with glorious sunshine in the morning – but then the rains came and our marquee offered some welcome shelter to clients.

As a generous sponsor of the show, Barringtons MD Phil Wood and Andy Bridge, a director, were invited to address the crowds during an interview with Signal 107 which brought along its radio roadshow.

Phil Wood said: “It was a great day despite the mixed weather and we were pleased to offer hospitality to lots of people who took a keen interest in how we operate as a firm.”

Barringtons lifts the lid on mechanics for women!

City of Ladies, the business women’s networking group sponsored by Barringtons, put its members in the driving seat to help raise cash for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.

The group was introduced to basic mechanics by Lipsticks and Dipsticks, run by Steph Haynes and Amanda Mason of C&S Haynes motor repair centre at Silverdale.

Steph said: “Our aim is to give women some basic knowledge of what lies under the bonnet of their car with free courses to ladies who want them. Even in this day and age some women don’t even know how to top up their oil or screen wash and put themselves at risk by being unable to change a wheel.”

City of Ladies were given a crash course in how to care for their car during a lunch at our Newcastle office.

As a thank you, Barringtons gave a donation to the hospice, the repair centre’s chosen charity.

It pays to use the bureau

Our Nantwich office has welcomed a new addition to its team as we extend our popular payroll service to the town.

Our Payroll Bureau at Newcastle handles earnings for thousands of employees across the city relieving firms of the headache of handling tax and National Insurance deductions from pay packets as well as other matters such as maternity and paternity payment arrangements and redundancy settlements.

Heading up the service at Nantwich will be Helen Bridgwood, (pictured), a law graduate who also holds the Association of Accounting Technicians payroll qualification.

Helen said: “The aim is release firms from the burden of calculating complex figures and allow them more time to do what they do well – running their businesses. For most staff, it is all about the money. Get your figures wrong and you can have a lot of unhappy people on your workforce which is why it makes sense to use a professional payroll bureau.”

Meanwhile the bureau is preparing for the biggest shake-up in the 60-year history of the PAYE scheme. The introduction of Real Time Information (RTI) will outsource a major HMRC role to the private sector creating a mountain of extra paper work for employers.

Helen added: “We have initiated our own staff training through the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals and our advice to employers who handle their own PAYE is to get sorted now or face chaos later.”

Barringtons – a key sponsor of the region’s tastiest event

Community-conscious Barringtons has joined a number of key sponsors supporting the Nantwich Food and Drink Festival 2012.

The event gives a big boost to the local economy by attracting more than 30,000 people into Nantwich where our office is based on Barker Street.

Barringtons has joined Cheshire East Council and South Cheshire-based businesses Mornflake breakfast foods, Bentley, Temples letting agents and Delmar Press printers in throwing its weight behind the festival taking place in Nantwich town centre September 14-16.

Festival chairman Deborah Robb said: “We are very grateful to Barringtons who have come onboard for the second year running and indeed to all our sponsors. Our aim is top help boost the local economy by pulling thousands of people into town over a weekend when things normally quieten down for tourism. Staff go red, white and blue for charity

Our Newcastle branch took on a distinctly patriotic feel to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Dress Down Friday saw the offices awash with Union Jack flags and colleagues dressed in red, white and blue.

Staff paid £2 to come dressed in the country’s colours – and even our office dog, George, put on a canine display of patriotism parading in his Union Jack cloak!

A tea party proved a lot of fun and helped put extra cash in the pot for our local Douglas Macmillan hospice.

Administration assistant, Vicky Ogden, showed off her creative skills by making colourful, red and blue cupcakes.

Vicky said: “We have dress down day once a month and staff normally pay £1 to come in their casual attire. This month we decided to make it a bit special, charge £2, and have a tea party giving everyone a chance to toast the Queen.”

Over the years Dress Down Friday has raised hundreds of pounds for the hospice and the Jubilee event made another £60 for this worthy cause.

Lee lands safely

Our dare-devil colleague Lee Bridgwood has his feet back on safe ground after completing a skydive for charity.

Lee, 31, found plunging 10,000ft from a plane such an adrenaline-surge, he now plans to do solo jumps!

Even before leaping into the clouds at Whitchurch airfield, Lee had to overcome a personal challenge. He had to lose more than 3st to dive strapped to an instructor.

He said: “I’m pleased to report that I managed to land safely. It was an incredible experience and I’m now looking at obtaining a licence to be able to do solo jumps, the wife is not happy!”

Through sponsorship by friends at work, he has raised £600 for the local Douglas Macmillan Hospice and funds are still rolling in.

A warm welcome to the ‘Young Ones’

Barringtons is keen to support young people, not only through start-up business advice but also through the apprentice scheme.

Although red-tape ruled out us taking advantage of the Government’s £1,500 incentive payment, our commitment to training remains strong.

This month Barringtons has welcomed two new apprentices. Liam Gibson, 20, and Stuart Siddall, 19, both from Biddulph, are studying for AAT accountancy qualifications at Babington Business College while gaining vital office experience and support at our Etruria Road offices.

Over at our sister company, BCR, Newcastle girl Abigail Johnson, 22, is working with our insolvency specialists as a junior administrator after completing a Maths degree at Lancaster University.

Meanwhile Barringtons managing director, Phil Wood, the President of the North Staffs Chamber, has made newspaper headlines hitting out at red-tape which puts a strangle-hold on many British firms from giving young people a chance under the new Government apprentice scheme.

Rules firmly state that any firm that has hired an apprentice in the past three years is not entitled to the £1,500 payment designed to encourage take-up and Phil Wood appeared in a Sunday Telegraph article calling for change.

He said: “We are keen to give bright young minds a chance and will challenge any issue that blocks this and creates unnecessary complications for local people trying to grow their businesses.”

Bob joins the team

Bob Blackshaw is a welcome new addition to Barringtons.

Lifelong Stoke City fan and Potteries born and bred, Bob is a well-known figure from the local banking world after notching up more than 30 years as a senior corporate manager, first with the Barclays Group and then with Handelsbanken on Festival Park.

His banking consultancy role at Barringtons sees him helping clients with all manner of finance issues from raising funds to re-financing businesses.

City movers and shakers take on Zumba craze

Businesswomen will swap their high heels for trainers when the latest fitness craze reaches the City of Ladies networking group hosted by Barringtons at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle.

Stoke-on-Trent dance teacher, Kate Beauchamp, (pictured) who teaches Zumba classes in Stone, Stafford, Newcastle and Hanley, will be the guest speaker at the COL lunchtime event on May 3.

The group meets on a quarterly basis and attracts businesswomen drawn from all manner of professions including law, recruitment, marketing and banking.

Kate, a former leisure manager at Greens Health and Fitness, will put lunch guests through their paces at its third event at the theatre.

She first became hooked on Latin dance styles in 2002 when she undertook a charity cycle ride across Cuba. She returned to set up her own dance business, the Groove Academy, and has been helping people to shimmy, mambo and cha, cha, cha their way to fitness ever since.

COL was entertained by a chocolate expert from Kraft, new owner of Cadbury, at its February meeting.

Chocoholics enjoy lunch date

All things chocolate were the order of the day when the City of Ladies met for its quarterly lunch date at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle.

The networking group enjoyed an excellent turn-out for its second meeting at the theatre when Will Thorman, who works in research and development at Kraft – the new owners of Cadbury – gave a fascinating presentation on everyone’s guilty pleasure – chocolate.

Will traced the history of the humble chocolate bar from its roots with the ancient Aztecs who, without the aid of any technology, were aware of the mood-enhancing benefits of cocoa now scientifically proven to boost serotonin levels.

Stone Age man, Will explained, was a hunter gatherer – programmed to chase high-calorie, energy-boosting foods and with milk chocolate containing higher levels of fat and sugar, it ticked all the right pre-historic buttons.

Small squares of chocolate, containing varying amounts of cocoa, were sampled to demonstrate how a higher content made for a more bitter taste and darker colour.

It was the second meeting of COL at its new theatre venue, since moving from the centre of Hanley, and guests also enjoyed a great buffet spread with a range of salads, quiches, cheeses, wine and soft drinks as well as a warming vegetable soup.

They all went away with bars of Greens and Blacks chocolate, part of the Kraft group which also includes Toblerone, Terry’s, Bournville and Milka.

The next meeting of City of Ladies is on May 3.

Accountant sheds pounds to raise them for hospice

Dare-devil Lee Bridgwood, 31, is being sponsored by colleagues at Barringtons to do a fundraising skydive for the local Douglas Macmillan Hospice after shedding weight to meet the safety guidelines.

Tipping the scales at 17st 10lbs, Lee from Tunstall was too heavy to take the plunge strapped to an instructor and after Christmas he decided to take drastic action.

A combination of tough boot camp sessions and a strict diet has seen him drop a staggering 3st in six weeks.

He said: “I’ve had to make many changes but it’s been worth it. I used to have a pie as my mid-morning snack, now it’s an apple.

“But the hardest part was giving up a Friday night curry and pint with my friends. It was pretty miserable going out with them and just sticking to diet coke, so now I avoid temptation by not going at all.

“I still have a few pounds to go but the skydive is proving a good source of inspiration.”

Lee will plunge 10,000ft from the sky at Whitchurch airfield in April.
